Deadlock for Eskom wage negotiations

THE worst is possibly not over for citizens as Eskom employees could be downing their tools – again. Recently, certain parts of the country were affected by loadshedding after the utility’s employees downed tools over wage demands. The strike ended when Eskom and the unions representing the workers agreed to re-open the negotiations hoping to find common ground.

This week the unions requested a meeting with ministers governing the utility, following a deadlock in talks with its management.

In a statement the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) said, “We have noted the latest offer from Eskom. The parties have agreed that they are not going to do media interviews in order to give unions an opportunity to consult with their members about the latest offer from Eskom.”

The union went on to say: “The wage negotiations are at a sensitive stage and the NUM, NUMSA, and Solidarity have requested a meeting with the Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene and the Eskom Board. The NUM believes that the proposed meeting will help the parties to resolve their differences amicably and sign an agreement.”

A date for the proposed meeting has not been announced but the union said it’s going to take place as soon as possible.
