NSRI issues another spring tide warning

Beach-goers are urged to exercise extreme caution until the Spring Tide effect ends after the weekend.

THE National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has issued yet another warning urging the public to exercise caution around the coastline for the remainder of this week, as the Full Moon Spring Tide peaks on Thursday, 28 June.

NSRI spokesperson, Craig Lambino said the Spring Tide effect will last until after the weekend.

He said the public should expect rough sea conditions facilitated by the Spring Tide, together with an approaching cold front along the Northern and Western Cape coastlines and massive sea swells of four to six metres forecast by the SA Weather Service for parts of the coastline.

“Bathers, anglers, paddlers, boaters, coastal hikers and beach strollers are urged to be cautious. Bathers should only swim at beaches where and when lifeguards are on duty and swim within the safe demarcated swimming zones that lifeguards post using their red and yellow flags,” he said.

Parents are also encouraged to ensure that children are supervised around water.

Spring Tide happens twice a month, at full moon and again at new moon, causing a higher than normal high tide and a lower than normal low tide causing stronger than normal rip currents.
