Legal power connections set for Blackburn Village

Electrocution and fires from the illegal connections have been a common occurrence.

AFTER years of waiting the residents at the Blackburn Village Informal Settlement, situated along the N2 freeway will be connected to the City’s electricity grid.

Walking along the streets crowded with hundreds of illegal connections in infamously known as one of the most dangerous thing a person can do in the village.

Electrocution and fires from the illegal connections have been a common occurrence.

uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer confirmed on Monday that the project would start as soon as next week, and would take about three months to complete.

The infrastructure installation will include the electricity poles, wiring and individual pre-paid boxes.

“We are hoping that this will help alleviate the massive problem with illegal connections. I am very excited to see this development unfold,” he said.

In fact, the issue he said was so pervasive that while he was at the site this morning with a group of contractors one of the homes nearly caught alight.
