Animal lovers to protest dog meat festival

The demonstrations take place on Saturday, 23, June outside the Pirates Life Saving Club.

LOCAL animal lovers will tomorrow take to the streets calling for an end to the Yulin Dog Meat Festival. The annual festival held in Yulin, Southern China, every June sees thousands of dogs and cats slaughtered and served as meals. Various animal rights activists and organisations describe the festival as ‘gruesome animal cruelty’.

Among organisations calling for an end to this festival is local non-profit organisation, Khetani Animal Rescue.

This is the second year that the organisation will be holding public demonstrations in protest of the festival.

The organisation’s Judy van der Westhuizen, said thousands of dogs and cats are brutally killed each year during the 10-day long festival.

“These animals are burnt alive. We want to stop the abuse of animals. They say it’s their culture but I don’t think that’s true. It’s just blatant animal cruelty which must be stopped,” van der Westhuizen said.

She concluded by calling all communities to be part of the demonstration.

“In Africa we are the only organisation marching against the festival. We urge all communities to come support the call to end the Yulin festival,” she concluded.

The demonstrations will take place on Saturday, 23, June outside Pirates Life Saving Club, 619 Battery Beach Road in Durban and is expected to start at 10am.
