‘Exhausting’ search for vintage matric ride

Durban North resident, Matthew Armstrong is hoping to track down a unique vehicle to transport his 17-year-old sister to her matric dance.

THE matric dance has become one of the most iconic moments in the lives of learners. It is the day to celebrate the end of your school career and to ‘go out with a bang’.

So, when Durban North matriculant, Holly Armstrong had the dream of being escorted to her once-in-a-lifetime event in a vintage car, her brother, Matthew turned to the Durban North Neighbour’s Facebook page and appealed to local car owners to assist.

What he did not expect was the incredible community response he received. In little over a week his posts had garnered 28 responses.

“I was truly surprised and humbled by the incredible response. We definitely got a much better response than we ever thought we would get,” said Matthew.

He said while the one vehicle they had lined up from the post had fallen through they do have other options they are considering, and are hopeful of tracking down the perfect vehicle for the special occasion.

“At first I thought this was all overboard, as I did not go to my matric dance, and back in my day the matric dance wasn’t that big of a deal, but the more Holly spoke about it I realised how important it was to her. She is my best friend, so I really wanted to find a way to do this for her,” said the 29-year-old local comedian.

Speaking to the Northglen News Holly said she was grateful for her older brother’s efforts.

“After years of hard work this is the one day we all look forward to. It is a day where we get to feel special and celebrate our hard work with an awesome night. Having the perfect vehicle to escort us to the event would just be the cherry on top,” she added.

The 17-year-old Durban North College learner said she was hoping to find something unique and different. “Anything from a VW Volksie to a ’69 Impala would be a dream come true,” she said.

Holly’s matric dance will take place on Saturday 23 June at the Riverside Hotel.
