Treat your pets in support of a worthy cause

Durban North animal activist, Bianca Hauser is selling home-made pet treats to raise funds for animal rescue organisations.

DURBAN North animal activist, Bianca Hauser is on a mission.

Not only is she hoping to raise thousands of Rands in support of local animal rescue organisations, but she is also hoping to do so while providing healthy and delicious treats to the community’s furry critters.

Barkies Biscuits is an initiative launched through her NPO in October.

The aim, she said was to create something to give back to the organisation’s donors.

“We wanted to create a win-win situation. So, through this drive we provide the delicious and healthy homemade treats that donors can give their pets and the profits are donated,” she said.

The treats are free of any preservatives and are made for both cats and dogs in various flavours.

Through her non-profit organisation (NPO), Animal Assistance Association (AAA), which was founded in 2016, the 27-year-old donates between R5 000 and R7 000 for a selected charity every quarter.

The funds are then donated to needy animal rescue and care organisations throughout Durban.

“Many of the rescue organisations simply do not have the time to fundraise, and this is where we step in. We do it on their behalf, so that they can focus their attention on the animals in need,” she said.

Recently AAA made a donation of R5 000 to the Coastal Horse Care Unit in Cato Ridge.

Gill Olmesdah, the founder of the unit said the “fantastic” donation would help with the care and feed of rescued horses.

“Currently we have around 50 horses in our care, but we have had up to seventy. We are really grateful, as every little bit helps us with our cause,” she said.

While some of the rescues are confiscated by the unit, rehabilitated and then rehomed, due to abuse or neglect, others are signed over to the NPO by the owners who are either moving or can no longer care for the animal. They also assist with injured horses that require special care.
