Durban SPCA food stocks dangerously low

The Durban and Coast SPCA only has food stocks to last them the next two months.

“WE have never seen our stock room so low,” these were the words of Durban and Coast SPCA general manager, Caroline Smith.

“Normally, you can hardly get past the door without tripping over huge bags of dog and cat food piled up to the ceiling, and shelves jammed with cans, boxes and sachets of pet food,” she said.

However, since the recent VAT increase and petrol price hike donations to the non-profit organisation has dwindled.

Currently, the Durban branch only has a two month supply of food, said the organisation’s marketing manager Tanya Fleischer.

The dire situation, said Smith, was being exasperated by the fact that the organisation had also seen a marked increase in the number of animals brought into the facility.

“So on the one hand, we have more mouths to feed – while on the other, we have less food to go round. It’s very, very worrying,” she said.

“Our only hope is that every person in Durban with a heart for animals will rally round now and help buy pet food for the dogs and cats at the SPCA,” she said.

At the time of print the Durban and Coast SPCA had around 124 dogs and 77 cats in its care.

All kinds of donations are welcome, however the organisation is in desperate need of kitten food sachets, dry cat food, dry dog and puppy food.

Donations can be dropped off at the Durban branch: 2 Willowfield Crescent, Springfield Park from Monday to Friday (8am to 4pm) and Saturday (8am to 12.30pm), or it can be placed in one of the food bins at supermarkets around Durban.
