Street Store to restore dignity to Durban’s destitute

On the day, clothing donated by the community will be hung up and displayed for hundreds of destitute individuals to browse and select from.

THE Grace Family Church in uMhlanga is hoping to restore some dignity to the homeless community in Durban, with its annual Pop Up Street Store.

The event, which will be hosted by the Denis Hurley Centre on Saturday, 16 June, provides an opportunity for the City’s ‘materially poor’ to experience a day of shopping.

On the day, clothing donated by the community will be hung up and displayed for hundreds of destitute individuals to browse and select from.

“Adults and children of Durban’s streets are provided an opportunity to fulfill a basic need, while enjoying a dignified shopping experience,” explained Dave Richter, missions director at the church.

Over the course of the last few weeks donations have streamed in from the community and JAM Clothing, filling a shipping container to the brim.

The project will also offer a hot meal, haircuts, foot washing and mini manicures to the beneficiaries.

“These might seem like random luxuries, however, many of the individuals would never ordinarily experience these things. This offers them an opportunity to feel cared for and pampered,” said Richter.

“It is often the case that the homeless are ignored, but sitting opposite to another human being will give them a chance to engage and feel heard and seen. Treating people in a way that is dignified, that is what lies at the heart of the Street Store initiative,” he added.

Richter said the church has been overwhelmed by the support of the community and has even received an influx of interest from volunteers.

About 130 people had signed up to assist on the day.

The church offers a range of opportunities for community upliftment. The next event will take place on Mandela Day at the church from 11am to 2pm. Contact Rosemary Khanyile on rosemary@grace.org.za or visit the website, www.grace.org.za.
