Tax season shortened by three weeks

SARS said it hoped the additional time would help their staff and the tax fraternity deal with return verifications before most taxpayers go on the December holiday break.

THE South African Revenue Service (SARS) recently announced that it will be shortening the annual tax season by three weeks.

The 2018 tax season will therefore run from Sunday, 1 July to Wednesday, 31 October.

The deadline applies to all individual non-provisional taxpayers and provisional taxpayers. Provisional taxpayers, who use eFiling, will have until 31 January 2019 to file.

The deadline for manual submissions is 21 September.

The motivation behind the shorter filing season, said Mark Kingon, SARS acting commissioner, is to allow additional time for SARS, taxpayers and the tax fraternity to deal with return verifications before most taxpayers go on the December holiday break.

“Often there are delays with taxpayers having to respond to our queries and requests over the holiday break. The quiet period after the first three months of tax season has now been removed resulting in efficient use of our resources,” he said.
