Durban North resident scammed out of R68 000

THE Durban North SAPS has warned the community to remain wary of online fraudsters. This after three residents were recently scammed out of thousands of Rands, buying items from popular websites.

According to Captain Rayond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, two cases were opened at the Durban North station and a third was passed on to the Greenwood Park station.

In one case, he said a resident was scammed out R68 000, buying a bike.

“The bike was sent to a dealership in uMhlanga, and when the victim arrived there to collect the bike he realised that it looked nothing like the photo advertised on the website, and was worth around only R10 000,” said Deokaran.

“The complainant had spoken to the spoken to the seller and everything,” he added.

The second victim attempted to buy a diesel pump worth R3 000, but after he made the payment and wanted to confirm the delivery he could not get hold of the seller, Deokaran said.

“We urge the community not to buy items online unless they are reliable. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. We also urge buyers not to give the sellers the money until they have received their item,” he said.
