Major plans ahead for Umgeni Bird Park and Mitchell Park Zoo

The popular bird park and zoo will be amalgamated.

A DECISION was made last week during a full council meeting to amalgamate the Umgeni River Bird Park with the Mitchell Park Zoo.

According to eThekwini Municipality’s Acting Head of Communications Mandla Nsele, the park is currently under a three year management contract with Top Administration Services while Mitchell Park Zoo is managed by the City’s Parks, Recreation and Culture (PRC) Unit.

“Top Administration Services and staff members currently employed under this contract have no objections to the takeover of this function, subject to the remuneration being placed at applicable salary scales and being placed on a close match basis with staff from the PRC Unit,” said Nsele.

It was also recommended that the staff at the Umgeni River Bird Park be placed before the expiry of the current three year contract.

Furthermore, he said the total number of employees to be amalgamated, as well as the  financial implications still needed to be presented to the Community Services Committee for final approval.
