How to: Renew your driver’s licence

Here is what you need to know about renewing your driver's licence.

EVERY five years motorists have to face the queues at their nearest Drivers Licence Testing Centre to renew their driver’s licence.

This is generally a loathed task, but there are some tips one can follow to make the process as painless as possible.

The most important tip is to be prepared. Having all the right documents and other bits and bobs will ensure that you can tackle the renewal process without being turned away.

According to the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport, you will need your ID document, proof of residence (no older that three months) such as a municipal utility bill, telephone account or retail store account, an ID sized photograph and the appropriate application fee.

While some of the centres do offer credit card facilities it is safer to take cash as it will allow you to pay the application fees in cases where their credit card facilities are down.

The department states that while you will not need to take a driver’s licence test, you will need to undergo an eye examination, and if it is found that your sight condditions have deteriorated, new conditions will be attached to your licence.

You can have the eye test done by your local optometrist.

Once you have completed the application your new driver’s licence should be ready in four to six weeks.

A driver’s licence can be renewed at any testing centre in the country, but please note that you will be required to collect your new card from the same centre.
