Community urged to be part of war room

The meetings are aimed at bridging the gap between community members and government.

LOCAL councillor Shaun Ryley has urged community stakeholders to be part of the newly launched war room initiative. Recently, the initiative spearheaded by local government was introduced to Greenwood Park residents. War rooms are part of government’s Operation Sukuma Sakhe aimed at providing community members with a platform to communicate their problems to the relevant authorities.

Councillor Ryley said: “These meetings are aimed at bridging the gap between community members and government. We are hoping that it helps us improve service delivery in the poorer parts of our community.”

Recently the Durban North community had its first war room meeting at the Greenwood Park police station. Community leaders elected their war room committee with Grant Coka as the convener and Musa Maluleka as the scribe.

Ryley said the current community committee will serve as the war room initiative committee, adding that they are hoping that it strengthened the relationship between government and private businesses.

“We are hoping to get the buy-in from community stakeholders like school governing bodies, NGOs, community forums and businesses. Working with them will make it easier for government to fulfil its promises to the community,” Ryley said.

Riley concluded by apologising to community members who attended the last war room meeting for the glitches with the venue.

“We humbly apologise for the inconvenience caused by the change of venue. We are grateful that the meeting happened and we achieved what was intended – which was to elect the convener and the scribe. We are also hoping that all the relevant departments pull their weight to make sure this initiative fulfills its purpose,” he said.
