Bringing museums in line with digital media

This year's International Museums Day theme encourages the introduction of digital media platforms within museum spaces.

AS International Museums Day (IMD) will be observed tomorrow, the eThekwini Municipality has launched its digital media platforms aimed at raising awareness about the importance of museums. The City has introduced a webpage to specifically deal with providing information and interactive tools for the public to learn more about Durban’s museums and art galleries.

Its acting spokesperson, Mandla Nsele said: “The increasing role of digital media in everyday life serves as the basis of connectivity between the museum and members of the public. The aim of this is to use digital media platforms to communicate with museum visitors globally and for them to have access to information pertaining to the museums’ ongoing programmes and other educational activities.”

As part of IMD celebrations and  in partnership with eThekwini Museums, namely the Durban Natural Science Museum, Local History Museums and Durban Art Gallery, the City also hosted youth and learners from various backgrounds on Thursday, 17 May, to teach them about the importance of preserving history through museums.

The event was held at the Durban Art Gallery and on Friday, 18 May more learners will flock in to learn about preserving history. This year’s IMD theme is Hyper-connected museum: New Approaches, New Publics which encourages the introduction of digital media platforms within museum spaces.

The City has also encouraged the public to visit museums.

“Members of the public are encouraged to visit any of their local eThekwini museums, take a selfie from inside the museum, post it in any of their social media profiles and most importantly #DurbanMuseumsOnline,” said the City.
