Salvation Army calls for help as temperatures plummet

Warm clothes are also welcome says the local Salvation Army church.

AS temperatures across the country plummet at the start of another winter season, the Salvation Army has appealed to the public to assist in helping homeless people.

Major Carin Holmes, PR Secretary of the organisation, says that an influx of people looking for help is expected in the next few days.

“Although we provide sandwiches and hand out blankets throughout the year, there is a particular need for this when the cold front starts to hit. The biting chill of a winter’s night is a tough time to be living on the streets, and we need all the help we can get to give assistance to homeless people,” she said.

“Giving help can be as simple and easy as sending an SMS message to our Helpline, 42290, with the word “Winterhelp” in the SMS. The cost of the SMS is only R30, the vast majority of which we receive goes towards assisting the needy,” Holmes added.

Warm clothes are also welcome and can be taken to the local Salvation Army church for distribution.

Companies wishing to contribute in kind are asked to contact Holmes on 011 718 6745, or on 082 994 4351.
