Suspect killed in shootout with police

Three men were spotted in a car reported stolen in Greenwood Park.

ONE suspect has been killed during a shootout with police on the Shaka’s Rock off ramp on the N2. The shootout occurred last night when police tried to stop a suspicious vehicle with three men.

According to police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala, the vehicle was stolen in Greenwood Park some time before the shooting.

“We received a tracking signal of a stolen vehicle and our Durban Flying Squad members gave chase. The Kia workhorse cab was spotted on the N2 northbound.  Our members instructed the occupants to stop, but the suspects opened fire directed at the members.  The members retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect,” said Gwala.

She added that the other two suspects were arrested.

“The vehicle, a pistol with two rounds of ammunition and a bolt cutter were recovered. The two suspects will be charged for attempted murder, possession of a firearm and theft of motor vehicle. They will appear in the Durban Magistrate’s Court soon,” Gwala added.
