A KWAZULU-NATAL businessman was lucky to escape serious injury following a shooting on the N2/M41 uMhlanga off-ramp on Friday afternoon. The man, who was driving from Richards Bay, had withdrawn a large sum of money and was travelling to an uMhlanga car dealership when the gang opened fire on him.
The driver of the vehicle, in an effort to escape the gang, drove right up to the entrance of Umhlanga Hospital before running inside the reception area.
“He didn’t know where the Durban North police station was and decided to drive to the hospital with the suspects on his tail. The man then locked himself in one of the toilets stalls of the hospital in order to get away from the gang. They followed him through the entrance of the hospital. They then ran back to the man’s vehicle and removed three bags which contained more than R50 000 in cash.

“He thinks the suspects, who were using a white BMW, began following him around the Ballito area. The suspects were armed with handguns and assault rifles. The businessman had a few shrapnel wounds from the incident. No one at the hospital was injured in the incident,” the source said.
In a statement released on their Facebook page, Netcare uMhlanga Hospital confirmed the incident took place.
“An incident took place on Friday afternoon where a man who was allegedly shot at by unknown gunmen close to the hospital, drove up to the front entrance of Netcare uMhlanga Hospital, exited his car and ran into the hospital looking for assistance. The hospital management immediately alerted Marshall Security which provides security services to the hospital, and which responded within seconds.

“The South African Police Service (SAPS) was also alerted to the incident, and responded to the hospital. The person who sought help was taken into the hospital for support. No persons were injured during the incident outside the hospital,” they said in a statement.
