Drag racers arrested in uMhlanga after chase

Both men were charged with reckless and negligent driving and their vehicles were impounded.

TWO men were arrested by Durban North police for allegedly drag racing in the uMhlanga area at the weekend. According to station spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, the drivers, both driving BMW 5 series vehicles tried to outrun police by speeding away from pursuing officers.

“Members of Crime Prevention Unit spotted the vehicles near Twilight Drive driving recklessly. The officers attempted to stop the vehicles who sped off. Pursuing officers were able to stop both vehicles on Herrwood Drive. Both men were charged with reckless and negligent driving and their vehicles were impounded.

“The drivers were also fined. Although our main focus is not drag racers, we will arrest and fine motorists who drive recklessly. Drag racers are a nuisance to the community and we hope the arrests and fines will act as a deterrent for anyone who chooses to be involved in the illegal activity,” he said.

Deokaran added the vehicles would now need to go through the re-licensing process due to the modifications made on them.
