Two more arrested for Moses Mabhida riots

A student and a gardener were arrested by police on Monday in connection with the violence that broke out at the stadium last month that left 18 injured.

KWAZULU-NATAL police have arrested two more people in connection with the riots that broke out at the Moses Mabhida Stadium last month.

Riots broke out at the stadium after disgruntled Kaizer Chiefs fans stormed the pitch after the final whistle as their side lost 2-0 in a Nedbank Cup match between the Soweto giants and Free State Stars.

This now brings the number of arrests to six.

Provincial spokesman, Brigadier Jay Naicker, said the suspects will be appearing in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on charges of public violence.

“The first arrest is that of a 21-year-old scholar from Newlands West. A headphone and a cordless microphone was recovered from him. The second arrest is that of a 42-year-old gardener from Hillcrest.

“We welcome the fact that suspects are beginning to contact the investigating officers in order for them to have their day in court and we are encouraging the outstanding suspects to do so immediately before police officers pounce on them,” he said.
