Durban North conductor celebrates decade on the podium

As well as conducting the DCO, Russell teaches music at Northwood School and also conducts the KZN Youth Wind Band.

LOCAL resident, Russell Scott, celebrates 10 years as conductor of the Durban City Orchestra (DCO). Under his tenure, the DCO has grown into a respected and versatile ensemble of over 50 players, performing regularly around Durban. As well as conducting the DCO, Russell teaches music at Northwood School and also conducts the KZN Youth Wind Band.

“Music has always been a major part of my life, be it my mother playing piano, my grandmother singing in the church choir, the somewhat ‘heavy’ music my cousins exposed me to, or the classic tunes my parents would play on family holidays. I started playing drums and piano early, and moved on to trumpet in high school, and it was never really enough just to play, I wanted to shape the music itself, so I guess conducting was always a natural trajectory for me.

“As for the Durban City Orchestra (DCO), it is an incredible privilege to conduct them, especially after all these years. Not just because these wonderful musicians trust me to lead them, but because of the fact that the entire orchestra is voluntary – every player is there of their own accord. These talented musicians of extraordinary ability give of their own time purely for the joy of making music together. I love the fact that after 10 years, we can still make an amazing sound together in an environment that is warm, respectful and fun. We often receive comments from groups we work with, that the DCO feels like a family – I’m proud of that,” he explained.

Taking over the orchestra upon his return from the UK in 2008, Russell has led the orchestra in large scale symphonic works, as well as backing SA superstars Gangs of Ballet, Kahn Morbee and Ard Matthews.

As part of the celebrations of Russell’s 10 Year Anniversary, the DCO is presenting the Masters Series – a series of concerts highlighting the growth and success of the DCO under Russell’s baton.
