Comrades athlete succumbs to hit-and-run injuries

Vusi Msibi passed away in his hospital bed on Friday morning.

A 49-YEAR-OLD Durban North resident has passed away weeks after he was struck by a motorist in a hit-and-run incident on Blackburn Road. Vusi Msibi, who was training to complete his 19th Comrades Marathon, suffered a fractured skull in the incident.

Despite regaining consciousness a few days after the accident, Msibi was still in a serious condition at Addington Hospital.

The father of two worked as a gardener for local resident, Trish Visagie, who had been trying to track down any information about the incident.

Several residents touched by Msibi’s story also began a BackaBuddy page which raised more than R40 000 for his medical expenses.

Another resident, Jeanette van Vuuren, who started a Facebook page to keep residents up to date with Msibi’s recovery posted the tragic news on Friday morning.

“It is with the greatest sadness that we need to post that Vusi passed away this morning. Thankfully he got time to share with his son. Vusi your race is over but your journey will remain close to our hearts forever, you were a very brave man and an inspiration to all who knew you. Condolences to family and to all the people that were Vusi’s ‘other’ family. Hamba kahle Vusi,  rest now dear man,” the Facebook post said.

Speaking to the Northglen News, van Vuuren said she would like to thank the community for their support.

“The north Durban community have been incredible, dropping off clothing for Vusi and special meals, it was really appreciated. Special thanks must also go to Regent Harriers Running Club and Julie Mitchell who were outstanding in their support of Vusi and of our efforts,” she said.
