Aluminium thief nabbed in Durban North

The suspect was also in possession of a stolen bicycle.

DURBAN North SAPS have arrested a man for being in possession of around R2 000 worth of aluminium believed to have been stolen in the area. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, the suspect was spotted on Tuesday at 4pm on Old Mill Way carrying large sacks on his back with metal piping in it.

“Our Durban North field unit who were patrolling spotted the suspect walking nonchalantly on Old Mill Way. When we questioned him he claimed he got the aluminium pipes from the recycle bins at Hyper-by-the-Sea. We then escorted the suspect back to the place where he claimed he found the metal pipes but found no trace of any material dumped in the bins.

“The man also showed officers a bicycle which he claimed was left on the side of the road which he was using. We arrested the man on possession of suspected stolen items. The bicycle has since been reclaimed by a local resident who said it had been stolen from his yard. The aluminium worth an estimated R2 000 has been confiscated and we are urging residents who’ve lost aluminium pipes to contact us,” he said.

The suspect who appeared at the Durban Magistrate’s Court this week has been remanded into custody. Police say their investigations are ongoing.
