Litter boom installed across Ohlanga river

A LITTER boom has been installed across the mouth of the Ohlanga river – visible on the seaside of the M4 highway in order to stop. According to Cara Reilly of Umhlanga Urban Improvement Precinct (UIP), the boom is designed to intercept floating litter.

“It targets principally plastic packaging that pollutes our oceans, river systems and beaches, the boom has been carefully positioned to work with river currents and prevailing winds, and is designed to cope with flood conditions. As unattractive as possible to vandals, it is fully serviceable and will be cleaned as part of a roster set up by the UIP.

“Litter collected here will be recycled where possible or sent to a landfill, and data on refuse collected will be used to inform a city-wide effort to stop ocean-bound plastic. The boom was made possible through a partnership with Durban Green Corridors (DGC), Durbanites Against Plastics Pollution (DAPP) and with the generous support of Plastics SA, DPI Plastics and the uMhlanga Community including the UUST; Park to Park; uMhlanga Manors and the uMhlanga UIP,” she said.
