Mr Ted’s accounting method gets the nod

The programme which runs for six weeks uses colors and symbols to help learners understand the basics of accounting.

ISIBONELO High School’s accounting learners and teachers said they’re grateful to Mount Edgecombe resident Ted Callan, who they say has made the subject more fun and easier to grasp. Callan runs extra accounting classes for the KwaMashu school on weekends using a new accounting method which he says simplifies the subject.

Some of the grade 10 learners who have attended Callan’s class all agreed that the method is easier especially because it doesn’t consist of jargon they may not understand.

“It is so much easier to learn with Mr Ted’s programme because it uses bright colours and is easier to grasp,” said Nontobeko Dladla.

“Colours attract us most. In one lesson we learnt so much and it’s easier because we are learning the basic rule which we incorporate to everything else ” said Thembelihle Ntshingila.

The programme which runs for six weeks uses colors and symbols to help learners understand the basics of accounting. This is the second year the programme has been running.

Callan said: “Last year we did the programme with grade 11s. This year we chose grade 10s because it is where they learn the foundation phase of accounting. For the next six weeks I’ll be teaching them all they need to know in accounting, which will help them as they go to higher grades.”

Grade 10 Accounting teacher at Isibonelo High School, Nompumelelo Kunene said as a teacher she can attest that the one lesson with Callan has improved the learners knowledge and their general understanding of the subject.

“I just started teaching grade 10s and I’m very impressed. Generally students at their level don’t know as much as they do. Maybe the department could work with people like Mr Ted to implement such programmes in the syllabus. It would make a huge difference,” said Kunene.
