UPDATE: SAFTU members protest peacefully

Protesters peacefully marched, singing struggle songs.

THOUSANDS of South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) members and their affiliated unions took to the streets of Durban today in a peaceful march. The Durban workers were joined by their counterparts in the rest of the country.

Metro Police spokesperson Senior Superintendent Parboo Sewpersad confirmed that so far the Durban march has no traces of violence.

The march, which resulted in temporary road closures started at King Dinizulu Park, moving along Dr Pixley KaSeme (West) Street, ending at the City Hall.

The workers are saying no to government’s approved national minimum wage of R20 per hour‚ or R3 500 a month. The wage is to be implemented from 1 May, International Workers Day. The federation said the minimum wage will keep workers trapped in ‘poverty and slave wages’.

Two weeks ago SAFTU threatened to make the country “ungovernable” if government continues with its plans of a R3 500 minimum wage.
