WATCH: Local lass leaves academic heads stunned

Watch what happens when this Durban North academic takes to the stage.

LOCAL resident and newly discovered social media sensation says it’s about time people stop taking academics too seriously.

Twenty-two-year-old Chrysantha Alicia Palan, stole the show at this year’s University of KwaZulu-Natal graduation ceremony when she received her Honours degree in Media and Cultural Studies on Monday.

The Durban North resident who graduated Cum Laude, ripped off her sunglasses and did the unexpected – at least not at a graduation ceremony.

Palan has been trending on social media since then. Speaking to the Northglen News today, she said she wanted people to see that not all academics are nerds.

“That girl in the video is who I am everyday. I just wanted people to see that academics are not all serious but can be fun and bubbly too. The attention I’ve been getting is overwhelming but I love it.”

Palan, who is currently doing her Masters degree, said she sees herself as one of the world’s greatest media moguls in the near future.

“I love to entertain and make people happy. Hopefully soon I’ll land myself gigs in the industry and start doing what I do best – making people happy,” she said.
