Ain’t no mountain high enough for Effingham mountaineer

Pakrash Harripersadh has started a walking club which already has an impressive 30 members.

AN Effingham mountaineer is on a mission. The 73-year-old says the older generation can do almost anything that their younger counterparts can do. And climbing mountains is just one of those feats.

Prakash Harripersadh, who has summited seven international mountains including Mount Kilimanjaro, said: “After I turned 60 I took to climbing mountains. Now that I am retired, I want to impart this knowledge to people my age. Retirement does not mean that you must sit on the coach and watch TV. We can live healthy lives. Not everyone can climb a mountain but they can do other things to keep fit and healthy.”

Harripersadh is so serious about his mission that he has started a walking club which already has an impressive 30 members.
“The group meets every Sunday morning at 5:45am. We meet at Siripat Road grounds in Reservoir Hills and every alternate week, we have a beach walk from Suncoast Casino to Ushaka Marine World. When we started we walked shorter distances, but have gradually improved,” he said.

Harripersadh said to keep fit, he walks the mountains of the Drakensberg every month. He said his main goal now is to give back to the community by teaching more people about mountaineering.
“I want to teach community members, young and old, about the extreme sport of mountaineering, ” he said.
