Public to comment on Land Expropriation Bill amendment

The Constitutional Review Committee should report its findings to the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces by no later than 30 August 2018.

GOVERNMENT is calling on South Africans to make their voices heard regarding the proposed amendment of Section 25 of the Constitution. The amendment will be to clarify that owners don’t have to be compensated for expropriated land.

The Constitutional Review Committee was instructed by the National Assembly (NA) and the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) to review Section 25 of the Constitution and other clauses where necessary, to make it possible for the State to expropriate land in the public interest without compensation, and propose the necessary constitutional amendments where necessary.

The Committee will engage in a public participation process to get the views of all stakeholders about the necessity of, and mechanisms for expropriating land without compensation.
The public hearings are proposed to commence in KwaZulu-Natal(KZN) on 15-18 May 2018.

The second chance for the KZN public to make their voices heard will be 6 – 8 June 2018. The Committee should report to the NA and the NCOP by no later than 30 August 2018.
