Raymond celebrates special milestone

One half of the La Lucia Minstrels celebrates his 80th birthday at the mall.

One half of the La Lucia Mistrels, Raymond Francis, recently celebrated his 80th birthday. Francis and Gordon Timm have kept patrons of La Lucia Mall entertained with their eclectic brand of music for more than 20 years.

To celebrate his special day, Cindene Sheasby from mall management gave Francis a number of birthday presents, including a cake, a voucher and two painted portraits of the Minstrels done by local artist, Anne O Brien.

“I really didn’t expect anything, I was so surprised when Cindene walked down to the parking lot with the gifts. I’d like to give my heartfelt thanks to all those, from mall management to the people who support us. It was a wonderful and unexpected surprise. My daughter also organised a surprise birthday party at Botanic Gardens,” he said.

Sheasby said the Minstrels were an intergral part of the mall’s history and they wanted to offer a token of their appreciation with the gifts.

Plans are afoot to capture the history of La Lucia Minstrels and other Minstrels bands with the formation of the Warwick Avenue Museum Durban which a local resident hopes to build on Wills Road, Durban.

One of the gifts was these two beautiful paintings by local artist, Anne O’ Brien.
