Man charged after false hijacking case

Investigations revealed that there was no hijacking.

GREENWOOD Park police have warned the public to refrain from opening false cases. This comes after a local man was charged with perjury after he reported a fake hijacking incident.

Greenwood Park police spokesperson Sergeant Vincent Mthembu said the man claimed he was hijacked in Durban North earlier this month.

However Mthembu confirmed that investigations revealed that there was no hijacking incident.

“Wasting state money and time impacts on the police service. We cannot tolerate such behaviour from those people who waste police resources by opening false cases. Those who will be found will be dealt with accordingly and will be harshly prosecuted. A case of perjury has been opened, ” said Mthembu.

Earlier this year a Mount Edgecombe man was charged for a similar offence.

The 37-year-old suspect planned a fake hijacking on 23 January.
