Conman targets residents in uMhlanga with ‘repair’ scam

The conman is also linked to several cases in the Berea area.

DURBAN North police are looking for a conman who is targeting residents of uMhlanga in a repair scam. The suspect has already scammed four people out of a total amount of R15 000 collectively by pretending to be a repairman, confirmed Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS.

“The modus-operandi in the scams are all the same in the area. The conman pretends to know the children of the people he scams and in some cases says he is a computer repairman, a car mechanic or a phone repairman and tells the victim their children owe him a sum of money not exceeding R4 ooo. In one of the cases, he approached a man in uMhlanga and told him his son owed him for repairs done on his car. He even pretended to phone the victim’s son and say that he was standing with his father.

“He then cuts the call and said the man’s son was in a meeting and asked his dad to pay him. The victim withdrew R3 000 which the conman made off with. In one of the incidents, besides taking the victim’s money he also made off with a woman’s phone after telling her he could secure WiFi for her at one of the phone shops,” he said.

Deokaran said the conman has a gold slit, a tattoo under his neck and is very smooth in convincing his victims that he is owed money.

“Our detective handling the case has also found that the conman is linked to several cases in the Berea area. ”
