Councillor recovering after car ploughs into river

Pete Graham said he will be speaking to the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to put up crossroad signs to warn other motorists driving on the route.

WARD 110 councillor, Pete Graham is recovering after he was involved in an accident at the intersection of Rinaldo Road and Moreland Drive. Graham suffered a concussion and several lacerations to his feet after his vehicle ended up in the river running parallel to the road.

Speaking to Northglen News last week, Graham said he will be speaking to the eThekwini Traffic Authority (ETA) to put up crossroad signs to warn other motorists driving on the route.

“I was travelling to Pietermartizburg when the incident occurred where I ended up in a collision and then subsequently in a river. It was just me in the car thankfully, as my nine-year-old daughter was meant to come with. I was travelling down Rinaldo Road when the accident occurred and the impact snapped the front turning arm of my car vehicle. I lost control of the vehicle and tried my best to avoid going down into the river below but the momentum tipped me over and the car landed on its roof.

“I was very lucky that part of the root of the tree at the bottom of the embankment stopped the car from landing in the deepest part of the river. I couldn’t open my door which was jammed and I could smell something burning which was some of the plastic bits that ended up in the engine. I had to kick out the  passenger window door and then clambered up the hill to safety. People often say they see a white light in near-death situations – well that white light was the airbags going off in my face,” he quipped.

Graham was asked to take two weeks off while his wounds,  concussion and internal bruising heals –  he said he would be approaching the City to have a look at the intersection.

“I’m not assigning any blame to anyone but I think this intersection could do with a sign warning other motorists of the crossroads. I would urge motorists driving near this intersection to be vigilant especially as the sports venue is used by so many children.” he said.
