Guard tied up in Sunningdale break-in

The armed suspects were disturbed by the homeowner.

A SECURITY guard was tied up by two armed suspects in a break-in at a Sunningdale complex in the early hours of Wednesday morning. According to Craig Adendorff of Sun Cell Watch, the suspects had filed down the burglar bars to gain access to the home at about 4.30am.

The suspects surprised the security guard who was patrolling the complex on Brookend Close and tied him up before entering the home.

“They were armed with knives and tied the guard up with wire. It is unclear whether they filed down or used bolt cutters to damage the burglar bars. Once they damaged them, they bent the burglar bars backwards and one of the suspects entered the complex while his accomplice stood watch on the outside. The homeowner, who was asleep at the time, awoke to find one of the suspects in the bedroom, he shouted at the suspect who grabbed two cell phones and jumped out of window before jumping over the walls of the complex with his accomplice. One of the suspects dropped his knife while fleeing,” he said.

Adendorff said there had been a spate of break-ins in the north Durban area with several break-ins occurring at complexes bordering the N2 freeway.

“There was the case of the woman being stabbed five times by an intruder and several other house break-ins in the north Durban area as well. The suspects are making use of the freeway because it takes police longer to respond to the freeway. There is no direct access from the area besides joining the new interchange or via the KwaMashu off and on ramps, so some of the suspects know they have time should they run in that direction. I would urge residents to consider looking at additional security measures including outdoor beams as a deterrent,” he said.
