Massive power outage hits Durban

According to Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley reports of the power outage are widespread.

THERE are reports of a major power failure around Durban. The Northglen News has been inundated with calls from residents concerned by the power problems in areas including Durban North, Amanzimtoti, the Durban CBD and various other areas.

According to Durban North ward councillor, Shaun Ryley, reports of the power outage are widespread.

“At this stage I cannot speculate as to why the power has gone out but we are trying to find out what has caused the outage. It’s been reported as widespread at this stage,” he said.

Reports have suggested that the cause of the outage is due to a substation failure in the Mariannhill area. There have also been unconfirmed reports that a transformer has blown at the Klaarwater high voltage transmission substation supplying the eThekwini region.

City spokesperson Tozi Mthetwa said she was still waiting for the electricity department to give feedback as to what cause the power outage.

“We are aware of the power outage affecting most areas around the City. Electricity has been restored in some areas. However, areas which are not yet restored will be restored shortly. Our technicians are on site investigating the problem. We apologise for the inconvenience,” she said.

Local residents have explained that power is being restored in stages. La Lucia, Sydenham, Glenhills, and Glen Anil have had their power restored.
