City confirms cause of Durban power outage

Power to about 50 per cent of areas in Durban was disrupted by this morning's outage.

THE eThekwini Municipality has confirmed the reason behind this morning’s power outage which left large parts of Durban without electricity.

City spokesperson Tozi Mthetwa said an explosion at the 275kv Klaarwater major substation caused widespread power outage to about 50 per cent of the areas in Durban.

“Areas in the northern, western and southern regions of the City are still without power and electricity is expected to be restored shortly. However, power has been restored in some areas across the City.

“Technicians are on site to assess the damage and the cause of the explosion. The City appeals for patience while we work around the clock to restore power in all affected areas,” she said.

Local residents have confirmed their power was restored in stages. La Lucia, Durban North, Sydenham, Glenhills, and Glen Anil have had their power restored.
