Sign Language recognised as a home language

"Deaf learners in South Africa no longer need to feel like foreigners in their own land,"said Umalusi

SIGN Language has officially been added as a home language in the country’s curriculum, and recognised as one of the examinable subjects for the National Senior Certificate.

The Council for Quality Assurance in General and Further Education and Training, Umalusi said this is a monumental step.

In a statement the council added that this will make deaf learners see and feel that they are part of the country.

“Deaf learners in South Africa no longer need to feel like foreigners in their own land, and at last they can exercise their rights to be taught and assessed in their own language,” said Umalusi

Umalusi highlighted this move as ground breaking.

“This ground breaking move serves to serves to recognise deaf culture as a fundamental part of South African culture, ” said the Council.
