M13 suspects linked to Durban North armed robberies

A sixth suspect who was injured in the shootout was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard.

THE five men killed in a shootout and high-speed chase along the M13 on Monday afternoon have been linked to two armed robberies in Durban North. Durban North SAPS spokesman, Capt Raymond Deokaran, said the suspects have been linked to two cases.

“The suspects have been linked to robberies Cambridge Drive and Hoylake Drive. A white Mercedes Benz SUV was used in both robberies. We are currently trying to link the men to more cases,” he said.

Colonel Thembeka Mbhele, the provincial police spokesman, said the the men had robbed homes in Kloof and Pinetown when they were intercepted.

“The suspects opened fire on the police, who retaliated. The suspected driver of the vehicle lost control, crashing and overturning on the M13 highway. Three firearms were recovered from the suspects with their serial numbers filed off. Two TV sets, two digital cameras and a laptop were found inside the suspects’ vehicle – believed to be stolen during the house robberies. It is alleged that suspects had been involved in more than two house robberies on the day,” she said.

A sixth suspect who was injured in the shootout was taken to hospital for medical attention under police guard.

He will be charged with attempted murder, possession of unlicensed firearms, possession of stolen property and house robbery. He is set to appear in the Pinetown Magistrates’ Court after being discharged from hospital.
