Suspects linked to Durban North robberies arrested

One of the suspects was shot and injured following a high-speed chase and shootout.

TWO men were arrested after a high-speed chase and shootout ended in Lamontville on Wednesday afternoon. The men, who are part of a gang have been linked to several robberies including incidents in Durban North and surrounding areas. Hours before a high-speed chase ensued, community members on a local WhatsApp security group spotted the vehicle in Somerset Park and alerted authorities. A message was also put out on the eThekwini Secure WhatsApp group which tracked the movements of the suspects.

According to Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security, members of the SAPS, on patrol in the uMhlatuzana area saw a white Mercedes-Benz, with four occupants, matching the description and registration of a vehicle used in a house robbery in the Reservoir Hills area earlier in the day.

“In an attempt to evade arrest, the suspect vehicle took off at high speed and a chase ensued, with the armed suspects opening fire on the police. The SAPS returned fire, striking one of the suspects in the upper body. The vehicle was abandoned off a main road in Lamontville, with the armed suspects alighting from the vehicle and fleeing on foot into nearby dense bushes.

“Marshall Security’s Special Operations Team along with the SAPS K9 unit conducted an extensive search resulting in the arrest of two suspects. A number of firearms, live ammunition, house breaking implements as well as property believed to have been taken from the home in Reservoir  Hills, were all recovered in the abandoned vehicle,” he said.

The two remaining suspects remain at large.
