Police warn of ‘shopping discount’ scam

There have been four cases reported so far already.

DURBAN North SAPS have warned shoppers to be wary of a scam targeting vulnerable women at shopping centres and malls. So far four cases, four in uMhlanga and one in Durban North have been reported. According to Capt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the Durban North SAPS, said the scam involves gaining the trust of shoppers in order to steal their handbags.

“The suspects operating this scam are women and approach the shoppers saying they know the manager of the store and are able to get them a discount on certain products. They then ask the victims to go get the products specified and gain their trust and say ‘leave the trolley with us’. Most of the women targeted leave their handbags with all their valuables in the seat of the shopping trolley.

“The suspects then steal the handbags and leave the store before being spotted by the victim. We have now had four reported cases in the last two weeks in Durban North and uMhlanga. I urge shoppers to be wary of this scam and don’t fall victim to this discount ruse,” he said.
