RESIDENTS of Siyathutuka Informal Settlement have built their own speed bumps on Sea Cow Lake Road after two children were knocked while playing on the road recently. The residents say they have approached the eThekwini Municipality to request three humps to stop vehicles from speeding on the busy road.
Chairperson for the settlement, Innocent Mathaba, said they were frustrated as their pleas for help had gone unanswered. This he said prompted them to take matters into their own hands. He added the settlement was home to hundreds of young children who play close to the roadside.

“They are most at risk. I have sent an email to the City requesting help with speed humps but there has been no response. The two children who were knocked recently were lucky to escape serious injury but we are fearful this may lead to a fatality. Over the years there has been numerous accidents and last year we had a gang try to outrun police but crashed into some of the shacks.
“We’ve decided to take this step to protect the community. We may put up another one because there are other sections of the road that are dangerous. We want proper marked speed humps and street signs to show there is a speed hump ahead.
