Suspect in Siam Lee case charged with kidnapping

The 29-year-old suspect, who is a biochemist and businessman was arrested on Wednesday evening in connection with the Durban North resident's murder.

KWAZULU-Natal Provincial Police have confirmed the 29-year-old suspect arrested in the Siam Lee murder investigation has been charged with various other offenses including kidnapping.

The 29-year-old suspect, who is a biochemist and businessman was arrested on Wednesday evening by police and Durban PI, Brad Nathanson in connection with the disappearance of Siam Lee. Earlier this week, residents called for the closure of the brothel where police confirmed Lee stayed.

The 20-year-old’s burnt body was discovered near a farm in New Hanover in the KZN Midlands more than a week ago. Lee had been missing since 4 January and was last seen leaving her workplace on Margaret Maytom.

The suspect is due in court this week facing a number of charges.

“The suspect was charged for murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm and defeating the ends of justice. A charge of kidnapping has been added. We are still waiting for DNA results at this stage to confirm if the body found in New Hanover is that of Siam Lee,” SAPS provincial spokesman, Col Thembeka Mbhele.

The Mercedes Benz Vito which was at the centre of the murder investigation was also recovered at the suspect’s home in Assagay.

KwaZulu-Natal Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major General Bheki Langa hailed the breakthrough.

“Our detectives have been working tirelessly and this is the breakthrough we had hoped for. We will ensure that we do everything within our control to ensure that the suspect is placed before a competent court so that he can account for his actions,” he said.

Investigations are ongoing, added police.
