uMhlanga N2/M41 interchange set for completion in March

Construction on the project worth R816-million began in 2013.

THE N2/M41 uMhlanga interchange, which has been under construction for the last five years, is expected to be completed by March this year. That’s according to Corne’ Roux, project manager at South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (Sanral) Eastern region.

Roux said the project which is a joint venture with the KZN Department of Transport, will see the N2/M41 Mt Edgecombe interchange be transformed into to a four-level systems interchange that will provide free-flow movements in all directions.

Construction on the project worth R816-million began in 2013.

“The original contract period was 36 months. However as a result of a slow start as well as delays experienced due to work stoppage and inclement weather, the contract is now only expected to be substantially complete by March this year,” Roux explained.

He added that around 40 000 vehicles enter or leave the N2 from the M41 on a daily basis.

“Due to the expansion of uMhlanga, La Lucia Ridge and Cornubia, the N2/Mount Edgecombe interchange was experiencing major traffic congestion with vehicles backing up on the M41 and onto the N2 in peak hours. An additional 40 000 vehicles enter or leave the N2 from the M41, daily resulting in substantial queuing of vehicles during the day.

“The existing interchange is being upgraded to a four-level interchange facility that will provide at least two lanes on each of the major movements. The upgrade includes the implementation of directional ramps which will eliminate the need for controlled signalisation, ensuring free flow of traffic in all directions. Once complete is will be a free-flow systems interchange,” he said.
