Weather Services issues high winds alert

The South African Weather Services has issued a weather warning saying it expects winds speeds of up to 65km/h (40knots).

STRONG south westerly winds are expected to hit Durban’s coastline today, 15 January, ahead of an approaching cold front. The South African Weather Services has issued a weather warning saying it expects winds speeds of up to 65km/h (40knots).

It also advised of predicted storm activity in western parts of KZN this afternoon.

Residents are cautioned to be aware of sudden cross winds if travelling, especially between buildings and to watch out for fallen trees, power lines and flying debris. They are also warned against starting open fires under the prevailing weather conditions.

Residents of informal settlements are reminded to apply fire safety precautions to avoid accidental fires which will spread rapidly in windy conditions. Crew on small boats are advised to say away from the open sea and seek shelter in a harbour, river estuary or protected bay.

Parked aircraft should be pointed into the direction of the wind and secured. Stay tuned to the radio and TV for any further warnings.
