Man injured in rock attack on Old North Coast Road

There have been five incidents at various spots on the N2 and three incidents on the M4 since the beginning of the year.

THERE has been yet another rock throwing incident, the fifth since the deaths of Amina Haffejee, 16, and her brother Abdur Raheem, 7, who died when a boulder struck the windscreen of the car they were travelling in on the N2.

The latest incident occurred at 7.30pm in Glen Anil (Old North Coast Road at the bridge just past Cypress Drive, heading towards Phoenix).

“Luckily the driver and single occupant of the vehicle, did not sustain any serious injury. He was assessed and treated by Crisis Medical paramedics and refused further hospital care. The incident will be investigated further by the South African Police Services,” Kyle van Reenen of Marshall Security said.

The rock that was thrown off the N2 bridge.

Last week deputy Mayor Fawzia Peer proposed that safety barriers and closed-circuit cameras be installed over bridges in hotspot areas.

“We are investigating the possibility of installing safety barriers in the form of steel cages to prevent objects being thrown from overhead bridges. This cannot be done overnight as normal council processes will have to take place and this will also depend on funding,” Peer said.
