Protestors burn tyres on N2 before Sibaya

Police have urged motorists to drive with caution in the area.

PROTESTERS have blocked parts of the N2 highway going north just after the Sibaya Drive off-ramp in an attempt to draw attention to their plight. The protesters placed burning tyres across two lanes of the N2 freeway.

Drivers are using the emergency lane and attempting to drive around the debris. Police have urged motorists to drive with caution in the area.

According to uMhlanga ward councillor, Heinz de Boer, residents of the nearby Blackburn Village informal settlement are unhappy their electricity has not been restored.

“People haven’t had electricity for three days and residents are unhappy. I’ve reported the electricity fault to the deputy head of electricity however nothing has been done. Residents say they have been frustrated as well because the call centre never answers any calls. This is part of a greater problem within the City, where members of the public are getting frustrated with all the call centres because they cannot get through,” he said.

Last year, the informal settlement vowed to keep protesting until the City took their problems seriously.
