Durban North matrics do their schools proud

In 2017, a total of 161 081 distinctions were achieved nationally, an improvement of 1.8 per cent from 2016.

The 2017 National Senior Certificate (NSC) overall pass rate is 75.1 per cent, Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga announced on Thursday evening. In 2017, a total of 161 081 distinctions were achieved, an improvement of 1.8 per cent from 2016.

The main contributors for this are KwaZulu-Natal with 28 per cent; Gauteng with 22.4 per cent; Western Cape with 15.5 per cent; Limpopo with 9.5 per cent; and Eastern Cape with 9 per cent.

Danville Park Girls’ High School

According to the school, the Class of 2017 did themselves proud with a 100% pass rate. More than 98% met the requirements for University entrance. The Dux Joanna Smith was one of KZN’s best performers and was the top learner for maths, physical science and top learner in the Umlazi District. Twelve other girls obtained seven distinctions each, that is fantastic. The class of 128 girls obtained 297 distinctions. Nearly 90 per cent of the class had aggregates over 60 per cent.

Northlands Girls’ High School

The Class of 2017 achieved a 100% pass rate. Sejal Mahadeo, the Dux of the school, not only achieved six As, but she also passed the IEB Advanced Programme Mathematics Exam with a distinction. She is one of four learners that passed with seven As. Santhuri Govender, Nikita Munsamy and Darshna Naidoo all boast seven As. Darshna was the NGHS Head Girl in 2017. Six learners achieved five and four As respectively.

Northwood School

A special mention to four learners who achieved an outstanding 7As, Kaamil-Inaam Naiker (who was invited to the Education Department Prize Giving ceremony), Yashil Morar, Nabeel Hussain, Farhaan Essop Ahmed. A further 10 students achieved 6 As.  Overall, 20 per cent of our students achieved three or more distinctions, with 96 per cent qualifying for further tertiary study.

Durban North College

Durban North College also celebrated some amazing results with the dux of the school, Yuvaan Boodhoo, managing four distinctions with an aggregate of 81%.
