Police warn Uber drivers about robberies

In the reported incidents, the suspects held up the drivers at gunpoint and robbed them of their belongings and also took their vehicles.

PROVINCIAL police have issued a warning to Uber and metered taxi drivers to be on high alert when driving in the KwaMashu and surroung areas. This comes after a number of robberies occurred where criminals pretend to be clients needing transport from restaurants around KwaMashu.

In the reported incidents, the suspects held up the drivers at gunpoint and robbed them of their belongings and also took their vehicles.

“We are appealing to the drivers to be vigilant and take extra precautions when asked to pick up clients. Recently, a 24-year-old driver was contacted to pick up a passenger from Phoenix and was meant to transport the suspect to J section, KwaMashu.

“When he arrived, the suspect entered the vehicle and pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the driver’s back. A second suspect approached and they demanded his cell phone. The suspects took cash and then he was forced to get into the boot of the car while the suspect fled,” he said.
