Work to begin on R300m promenade extension

Plans also include an amphitheatre located in the centre of the promenade serving as the main beach event space.

WORK on the beachfront promenade extension is set to begin next year. The extension is part of the City’s R35-billion Point Waterfront Development which will overhaul the entire area and further attract investment and tourists to the vicinity.

Afika Ndima, Project Executive in the office of the Deputy City Manager of Economic Development and Planning said construction is planned for January 2018 after the builders break.

He said the project starts from uShaka at Moyo Pier and is a continuous elevated structure spanning 750 metres in length and 30 metres wide reaching the Northern Breakwaters at the harbour entrance channel.

“Below the elevated structure is provision for the Point Watersports Club facilities together with a dedicated launch site. On the northern side beach facilities and amenities will include change rooms, ablutions for bathers and staff facilities.”

Ndima added that public parking and dedicated parking for clubs will be provided underneath the promenade. Restaurant facilities will also be leased out to operators.

Plans also include an amphitheatre located in the centre of the promenade serving as the main beach event space.

“There will be various on and off ramps at 50 metres to 100 metres intervals taking people to the beach level and back to the promenade level.”

The promenade extension unlocks the phase one investment of the Point Waterfront Development which will include a residential tower, retail mall and hotel. Acting Deputy City Manager for Economic Development and Planning Phillip Sithole said the budget of the promenade extension is R300 million of which 30 percent of the work will go to previously disadvantaged businesses.
