Egyptian goose euthanised after being hit by car

The young bird had to be put down due to the severity of its injuries.

A DURBAN North resident says she is heartbroken after a young Egyptian goose she rescued had to be euthanised due to the severity of its injuries. Mariet Holland said the gosling was struck on Ashley Avenue by a motorist in an apparent hit-and-run.

Earlier this year, Holland had put out an appeal to motorists to slow down while driving in the area between The Wash Tub on Ashley Avenue and Adrienne Avenue.

According to the vet, the goose had a severely fractured wing and sadly there was nothing more that could be done to save the bird.

“My husband’s and my worst fears were confirmed when we saw the helpless gosling this morning after it had been knocked down. He stopped and picked up the gosling and took it to the vet as CROW was still closed. I’m devastated that he had to be put down and I understand he could not be saved but careless driving endangering people and wildlife angers me so much. I urge residents and visitors to the area to please slow down,” she said.

Holland said that most vehicles do not stop at the Ashley Avenue stop sign and she feared that a disaster was imminent if drivers were not cautious.
