Pool supervisor to retire after 36 years

Durban North Swimming Pool says 'adios' to the Monty Pillay after 36 years of dedication to his work.

ON Friday, 29 December the chief supervisor of the popular Durban North Swimming Pool will hang up cap. Monty Pillay, according to local resident, Vaugn Seid has served Durban North residents for the past 26 years. In total his service has been 36 years.

Pillay started his career as a voluntary life guard, moved to the old Durban Aquarium where he fed and swam with the sharks eventually moving to Durban North pool.

When asked what most stands out for him over the years Monty said: “Looking after kids who have grown up in front of me, then brought back their children to meet my wife and I who we also have watched grow.”

Monty’s wife Nuns is also well know as she has run the pool “Tuck Shop” which is a firm favourite, especially with the children who frequent the pool.
